{"id":1275,"date":"2010-06-21T09:41:36","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T04:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.qadit.com\/blog\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2010-07-05T09:43:30","modified_gmt":"2010-07-05T04:13:30","slug":"password-protect-folders-in-windows-xp-workgroup-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qadit.com\/blog\/password-protect-folders-in-windows-xp-workgroup-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Password protect folders in Windows XP Workgroup environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In a Windows XP workgroup environment there might be a need to password protect or restrict access to specific folders.\u00a0 Here is a tip on how to achieve this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<!--more--><br \/>\nIn many SME organisations the network is usually of a workgroup setup without any domain setup.\u00a0 In such cases, generally most of the folders are &#8220;shared&#8221; to enable other users to access the folder contents.\u00a0 However, the problem with sharing folders is that once shared, it becomes available to all members of the workgroup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nAt many times, the need arises to selectively share folders &#8211; where access is given only to some of the users while still restricting access to such folders from other users.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nThere are some commercial tools like Lock&amp;Hide, Folder Lock, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nHowever, there is also another way of achieving this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n1) Log into the PC that is having a the folder that you wish to protect as an Administrator<br \/>\n2) Click Start -&gt; Control Panel -&gt; User Accounts, then click on Guest Account and make sure it is turned on.<br \/>\n3) Now Click Start -&gt; Run, type cmd in the entry box, and click Ok.<br \/>\n4) At the command prompt, type Net user guest password and press Enter<br \/>\n5) Again, Click Start -&gt; Control Panel -&gt; User Accounts, then click on Guest Account<br \/>\n6) Notice that you can now set a password on the Guest Account. Set a Password and restart your Computer<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nNow, when a person tires to access your shared folder, they will be prompted for a username and password to continue. Use the username &#8220;Guest&#8221; and &#8220;password&#8221; you have set to access the password protected shared folders from your network.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nTo share a folder under hidden name, add $ to the name, i.e Myhiddenfolder$.
